Performing Arts: My 'Other' Art

In 1973, I played my first Remembrance Day service with the Whalley Legion Junior Band, then the official band of Surrey. My Dad, Will Verra, was the music director for 31 years. The marching band marched in the colours back then and after playing hymns for the wreath laying, the dance band would play music upstairs for the veterans. They would dance to Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton - big band sounds from another era, another time. There are fewer veterans left these days, and the same goes for the Whalley Band members. We’ve said goodbye to veterans, band members, my Dad and today, the old Legion 229 building. So many great memories of this event, of Whalley, of Surrey.
